Skinny, Keto-Friendly Spicy Margarita Recipe
Looking for a refreshing, light, diet-friendly adult beverage? Look no further. Whether it’s 5 o’clock somewhere or you are prolonging the end of summer, this drink is the perfect blend of sugar and spice and everything nice.
For those of you who are not keen on the spice, you can always forego the heat. And for those who like to feel the burn, you can always add more.
Traditionally, a margarita consists of triple sec, Cointreau, tequila, and well, let’s just say that’s a boat load of sugar. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central, there are 274 calories in an 8-ounce margarita on the rocks, 36 grams of carbohydrates, and 36 grams of sugar. That’s about 7 teaspoons of sugar per drink. Yikes!
Whether you prefer a frozen blend or on the rocks, most also are adorned with a salted rim. I have recently been seeing more establishments offering the choice of a salted or sugared rim. Keep in mind, this will add to the caloric content and also add to your waistline.
The reason the margarita is so popular is because it is an invigorating citrus-infused cocktail that can be sipped and enjoyed not just on Taco Tuesday, but especially on Taco Tuesday.
When using fresh citrus fruits in lieu of flavored liquors, you can adjust the flavor profile to your palettes desire. For example, you can add fresh strawberries for a strawberry margarita, or mango for a mango margarita. Mango habanero is one of my personal favorites. If you don’t have access to these fresh fruits, you can either use frozen or you could switch up the seltzers. Seltzers come in all kinds of cool flavors these days, so get creative and have some fun.
