Date Almond Delights

Date Almond Delights

When you get a craving for something sweet but nothing seems to crush those cravings, why not step outside your standard sugar wheelhouse, and opt for one of nature’s sweeteners? Enter the date.

Dates are a great natural sweetener that can be used as a healthy alternative to refined sugar in recipes, providing sweetness along with nutritional benefits.

For instance, dates aren’t just sweet. They’re also packed with essential nutrients, including fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins like B6. They provide a quick source of energy, so they’re a great pre-workout snack. In addition, they contain several antioxidants, including flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acid, which may help protect your cells from free radicals and reduce inflammation.

As if that isn’t enough to sell you on dates, they may also promote digestive health by aiding in regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. They also support gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria in the intestines.

The potassium and magnesium in dates are important nutrients for heart health, as they’re needed to help regulate blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and support overall cardiovascular function.

Bonus: Despite being sweet, dates have a low glycemic index, meaning they don’t cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels when eaten in moderation. No spike often means no crash.

With all that in mind, I wanted to create a delicious date-forward recipe. I came up with the following, which I found to be super simple to make. What’s more, it’s perfect for my middle schoolers who are active in volleyball and soccer, and I can rest easy knowing they’re snacking sensibly.
