DIY Electrolyte-Rich Popsicle Recipes (made for summer)

Electrolyte Popsicle Recipe

Alas, the summer heat is in full swing, and to beat the heat, you want a refreshing, cool treat. Why not get the best of all worlds by enjoying your favorite superfoods with some powerful antioxidants and electrolytes—on a stick! Popsicles aren’t just for kids, folks, and fortunately, these recipes are kid-friendly and mom-approved, so the whole family can enjoy!

While you could absolutely use a base of water, and I often do, you can also use fresh-squeezed citrus juice, green tea, or kombucha. The kiddos enjoy True Lemon (for kids), which is made with stevia and comes in lemonade and pink lemonade. I love that these come in individual stick packs, so I just add to water and can get two popsicles out of one stick pack (three if I load them with antioxidant fruits). These contain no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or preservatives—just like BioTRUST Nutrition products!

For these recipes, I selected healthy flavored kombucha, which contains only purified water, organic green tea, organic black tea, and organic sugar. While kombucha is an acquired taste, it has been said to have a whole host of healthful benefits. As a natural probiotic, kombucha may help your digestion, boost energy levels, and help the body rid toxins. Other claims include immune system support, promoting weight management, supporting heart health, and potentially preventing disease.

Why Electrolytes are Important

I also like to add electrolytes to my popsicles. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride are found naturally in our bodies. These vital minerals are needed for proper hydration and fluid balance. Our bodies strive to keep a constant balance of fluid. When we sweat—and even when we pee—we lose precious water and electrolytes, which we have to then replace.

Sodium, in particular, tells your body to hold onto the water it has, rather than shuttling it overboard. It also helps to maintain blood pressure and electrolyte balance, which is important to the functioning of organs, muscles, and nerves.

If you’re drinking lots of water (as you should), it’s also a good idea to make sure you’re consuming appropriate amounts of electrolytes. This is especially important when active or exercising due to the loss of electrolytes through sweat. For example, although sweat rates can vary, on average, people lose about 900 mg of sodium per hour of exercise.

Also, for folks who pride themselves on eating limited processed foods, you may also need to add additional sodium to ensure adequate intake. Over 70% of the average person’s sodium intake comes from processed, packaged, and prepared foods, so if you’re avoiding ultra-processed foods, you may not be getting enough sodium. Speaking of diet, if you follow a low-carb or ketogenic diet, you may also need to pay close attention to your electrolyte intake, as carbohydrate restriction increases the excretion of minerals like sodium and potassium.

Also, if you drink coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages, you may need to pay attention to your intake of electrolytes, particularly sodium. You see, caffeine has been shown to increase the elimination of sodium. It’s estimated, for example, that 90 mg of caffeine (about 1 cup of coffee) results in an additional 400 mg of sodium lost through urination.

Our Favorite Electrolyte Booster

This is where BioTRUST Nutrition Mojo H2O™ comes into play. These come in two delicious flavors: Strawberry Watermelon and Mandarin Orange. I love these because they are portable, and I can throw in my gym bag, purse, or backpack, and jazz up my water anytime, anywhere.

Metabolic Age Quiz

Made with no sugar, artificial sweeteners, or other junk, these naturally flavored and sweetened healthy water enhancers also deliver electrolytes and energizing B vitamins with each squeeze.

As many people recognize, B vitamins are vital for a healthy metabolism and improved energy levels. They also help with mental focus, clarity, and function—helping you think more quickly and clearly.

Mojo H2O is also…

  • Keto- and Paleo-friendly
  • Non-GMO
  • Soy-, gluten- and dairy-free
  • Vegan
  • Manufactured in a GMP-certified facility
  • Third-party tested to ensure purity, potency, and safety
  • Free from added sugar or artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, or preservatives

Now it’s time to create some magic and add in some antioxidants in the form of blueberries, pomegranate, strawberries, watermelon, and peaches. I also found some adorable edible flowers on Amazon. This particular blend was carefully selected for its rich antioxidant benefits that may aid digestion and support healing.
